Go The Socceroos!
A crowd of up to 20,000 soccer fans gathered around Federation Square to watch the telecast of the Australia-Croatia match at the 2006 World Cup.
Many of the Australian team are from Croatian backgrounds, and some of the Croatian team play here in the Australian league - so interest was enormous.
The result of the game 2/2 draw advances Australia to the 2nd round, for the first time in history. The last time Australia qualified for the world cup was in 1974, and we never got past the 1st round.
It's good to see the game come into the limelight in this rugby/aussie rules mad country... it's a well-known fact that more kids play soccer in Australia than any other sport.
Heaven knows what will happen when we play Italy in the next round - I think most of the rest of the team have Italian heritage!
Winners Are Grinners... go the 'roos...

Multi Cultural takes on a new meaning when you look at the Socceroos and the rest of the worlds soccer clubs Della, there seems to be an association with most of Europes teams somewhere.
Last nights game was almost spoilt by some dubious decisions by the ref, but I guess the result is the main thing.
I should follow soccer but it's just never caught on here. I'm surprised our team did as well as it did.
In any event, now that the USA is out of it and I don't know who else is still in, three cheers for Australia.
Congratulations! If England drop out this afternoon, we´ll certainly be shouting for you, the Socceroos and Everton´s Tim Cahill.
Peter, I so agree... I started my soccer involvement with the Italians in North Queensland, back when I was in my early teens. My stepfather used to referee local games, they get a hard time, but the other night was abysmal...
Ann, I think US will improve in years to come... very competitive... and they have really just started playing at world level.
Kaz .. thanks... we are all barracking for a miracle... anything can happen on the day.
