not just Art: the Wandjina tradition

Wandjinas - Gabriella Dolby

The Wandjina art tradition is central to the creation of humanity and the entire physical and spiritual world... is the world's oldest unbroken spiritual art tradition dating back to around 15,000yrs possibly more.

Wandjina and Gyorn Gyorn
Marjorie Mungulu

As with most complex cultures, opinions about creation can differ. According to David Mowaljarlai (dec), a highly respected Mowanjum elder, the Worora, Ngarinyin and Wunumbul people are the three Wandjina tribes. Only these three tribes see the Wandjinas as the true creators of the land. Many other Australian Aboriginal tribes believe that the Dreamtime snake or Rainbow Serpent was the main creative force.

Gyorn Gyorns - Sandra Mungulu

According to Mowanjum artist Mabel King (dec), during Lai Lai (the creation time), Wallungunder, the “big boss” Wandjina, came from the Milky Way to create the earth and all the people. These first people were the Gyorn Gyorn – what some gudiya (white) people call Bradshaw figures, named after the gudiya to first see them in 1891.

Wandjinas
By Donny Woolagoodja

Sam Woolagoodja (dec), a distinguished and eminent Worora leader and law man, described the Wandjina image by saying ‘their power is so great that they don’t need to speak, so they have no mouth. Their eyes are powerful and black, like the eye of a cyclone. The lines around a Wandjina’s head can mean lots of things – clouds, rain, lighting. The Wandjinas, he said, painted their own images on the cave walls before they returned to the spirit world.’

Coi Oi - Warren Barunga

The Broome 6 Gallery
is the only Australian art gallery representing the Wandjina artists of Mowanjum.

Della, I love anything about Wandjina! Love the mystery and eeriness of them and it is displayed so well in the art you have posted.

I think Wadjina are more Western Australian peoples' beliefs because in the Northern Territory and Qld, it seems to be the Rainbow Serpent that is the creator.

Great post

The Wurundjeri tribe in melbourne creator is "Bunjil the Eagle". Wurundjeri also say that "there is a place for everyone and everyone has a place on this land." They say "We are honoured to form this partnership in respect of your reconciliation of the Aboriginal people and their lives."

The Aboriginal Message Stick is now housed in St Patrick's Cathedral and the beautiful Stone Inlay in the Cathedral forecourt are magnificent and poignant additions to the Catholic heritage of Melbourne.

"For too long the indigenous people of this country have been left on the margins of our society, and sadly this has often been true of he Church as well. My intention in encouraging the installation of the Message Stick and the Sone Inlay was to acknowledge the wrongs of the past and to highlight the special place that Aboriginal people occupy in the Church."

"I welcome you to this great cathedral, and encourage you in visiting it to remember all who have helped to build and maintain the Church in Melbourne, especially the Aboriginal people.

George Pell, former Archbishop of Melbourne

best wishes

I'll try again - grrr! making such a mess of this. I misspelled a word earlier. Tried to correct it, wound up deleting the whole thing. Here goes another attempt.

Hi Della, just here to spend a good bit of time catching up on your site. Is that precious angel (not angle)in the upper left-hand corner of home page really you!? Adorable!!

Enjoyed this visit very much. Interesting article here. Have you hit mine lately? 9 blogs woven together trying to make it work like a regular website. I enjoy it so much, but it is a lot for anyone to read. Norvona is doing a lovely work with her two.

Well, just wanted to say "Hi, again". B..........

Hello Della ~ Great Aborinal Art at the Broome Gallery, and they had some great beliefs etc. Thank you for your comments to an earlier post of mine.
The fires mentioned were in NSW near Sydney when they had a tenperature of
33 degrees and extreme winds. Looks as though it could be a bad year for fires, ecause of lack of rain. Glad you found something of imterest at my post. Thanks, take care, Merle.

Just red your post about aborigene artcraft I love this very much. When my son were in Austrialia I asked him to buy me something and he came back with a beautiful wooden plate (there is a snake on) and a little napkin which looks like leather and there is also a snake on. Really beautiful. It's a pitty that this art is not known more !

Though we experience different cultures, I can see why you saw something in the mirror on my post - we share similar ideas about life, it seems. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I have enjoyed reading here.

Puss, so do I now, I cannot believe how little I knew about these things till I started down this road...

Lindsay, sadly I do know about the part the church has played in the past...

Hi Lee ::smiles at Lee::

Barbee... haha, I don't mind being called an angle, unfortunately a circle would fit me better these days! Your site is great...

Merle, there is ALWAYS something interesting at your place, thank you...

Gattina, your welcome - this IS a special community, I agree about meeting all sorts, I am so glad I found you, thanks for visiting...

Jeanette, thanks for the intro to Gattina...

Pauline, thanks for visiting, that mirror thing was quite amazing...

Hi Kerri, it's certainly a time thing isn't it... I always have to discipline myself to get my own posts done before I start reading - I love to comment as I go around, there is so much happening around the blog community, and time flies by...
