Happy Australia Day

Lee leaves me a note:

"Hey! Della...get out of that gazebo!! You are missed!"
thanks Lee, it's nice to be missed. Around about Wednesday I started to feel the pull, but haven't managed to get here before now.

I find it hard to believe it is Saturday already (it IS Saturday, isn't it?)... Over the last 9 days, I've had only single days off, 3 of them - it's work 1, 1 off, work 2, 1 off, work 2, 1 off, work 1, and now - I have 3 days off...

My routine changes, very dependant on my roster, I claim single days off as NO chore days - and I plan 'projects' to do when I have 2 or more days off together. This time I have broken the rule, and spent whatever time I had getting the last few things done in the yard, the landscapey things, that is - so Lee, you are right - I HAVE been in the gazebo!

And watching the tennis, of course, when I could - how sad for Serena, not that she seems to be fazed by it; I guess we'll see today if it affects her game, somehow I don't think so, I am expecting her to win.

Personally, I believe that little punk was doing what they say he was doing, it looks quite clearly so on the camera footage, but I don't believe Serena would be a part of it, she doesn't need to - how silly of him, she wont be grateful!

But my question is: if the TV camera crew saw that this was happening, why didn't they go to the authorities straight away and have somebody go up there? Why just keep filming and let him keep doing it?

If you haven't caught up with the story - the Channel 7 news team claimed to have filmed one of Serena's supporters using the reflection from his watch to try and direct the sun into the eyes of her opponent, here's what Serena had to say...

Big news story here yesterday (interesting timing...)

Palm cop to face charges
THE policeman at the centre of the Palm Island death in custody case will face a manslaughter trial after an unprecedented review by a former NSW chief justice contradicted the Queensland Director of Public Prosecutions' decision not to lay charges.

Some interesting thoughts on this one, I grew up in Townsville, in North Queensland, so Palm Island and it's people were very much part of my childhood, I posted on this last year - just the way things are? - and now I am very happy to see that justice will be seen to be done - by this I mean that it will be up to a jury to decide on the evidence, the policeman might not be guilty, and then again he might be - but either way the process needs to be visible - and the Queensland Government will face flack for having over-ridden the court system, but good-on-them I say!

I wont even get started on the Australia Day / Survival Day issue, just to say that one of the funniest cartoons I ever saw (I'll try and find a copy) depicted the early settlers arriving by boat in Botany Bay (the event which is commemorated by Australia Day) and on the shore is a bunch of Aborigines, trying to drive them back into the sea. So, the European population celebrate their arrival, the indigenous population are asked to celebrate an invasion.
And what happened next is, of course, history.

I've pinched these pics from
the photo-gallery pages
on The Australian newspaper, and I could have easily got lost there - some great photos to browse through.

We've had more glorious rain overnight - that's about 3 inches (76mm) in the last 2 days!

Noel has sent me this link so I can monitor what we've had and what's coming, and whether I have to water... he knows about these things (actually, he knows about EVERYTHING - font of all knowledge, one of the things I love about him).

It is a great site, click on your own location and everything you need to know about your weather, and some things you don't, apparently if we ever get a serious storm surge here, we'll be washed into the sea!

here's the link:

OBSERVATIONS

wow - that was a bit - if you've got this far - serves me right for leaving it so long between posts!
Never mind, I've still got a day and a half left for reading!

Now I need a cold beer after that long post, Della! ;) Good post, however and worthy of a cold Crown Lager, I reckon!

Yes, that guy with the watch looked very suspect, didn't he? No action is going to be taken, though. Should be a good women's final this afternoon...and great men's final tomorrow night...whew! The Open has been full of excitement and brilliant tennis.

Good to have you back, Della...even if you've got grass stains all over you! ;)

Hello, Della, nice to see you.

Interesting story of the guy with the watch during the Serena Williams match. I didn't see that particular match but it's a very unsporting thing to do, if he was doing it.

I agree about the decision to charge that copper. At least he will be seen to be judged or not by his peers, not have the Government step in and "fix" things.

Have a good weekend and enjoy your gazebo!

WAY TO GO SERENA!!!!

Lee, funniest thing, I had one more small thing to do outside, but I needed Noel to do a cut with the chainsaw first. just as I was finishing this post, he came to get me, and so, yes - one more time outside - but it's done now...

Hi Robyn, very unsporting, and sadly I think he was, but I don't believe Serena would even know about it, much less condone it - she really is a champion...

Hi Della ~~ Nice to see you back with us. The watch incident looked suspect
but the girl did not complain so it's over. And if that policeman is guilty of causing a death in custody, he should pay for it. I hear talk of strikes by the police.
Thanks for your visit, glad you enjoyed Ordinary miracles and te jokes. I was unsure about putting the special napkins on, but seems there are several stories like your son and Mountain Mama has one on her blog. Take care Della, and don't work too hard. Love, Merle.

Hi Della.. I haven't been watching tennis here, but do see the news reports on them. I can't believe someone would try something like that! I think the worst part is "announcing it in the news" for others to try...and you KNOW that someone will, just because they heard of it! sigh.

so.. is the gazebo finished? do we get a look at the finished product??

Happy Australia Day dear Della! I haven't been watching any of the tennis...when my oldest son lived at home, he'd always watch it so I'd watch a bit with him but now that he's moved away I never think of it. I hadn't heard about the watch incident...after reading the story, it does look a bit suspicious!

Hi Della Great post I agree the man with the watch was very suspect.
If the policeman is guilty he should be dealt with.

Hi Della

A highly informative posting.

I think the tennis was an anti climax for me, too one sided . Nevertheless Federer has signalled a new style, a mixture of backline exchanges and volleying, lobs and drop shots. I think this change of style will herald much needed variety over boring base line rallies.

The decision to charge the Palm Island policeman with manslaughter has been warmly welcomed by the aboriginal community. The criminal code has such a strong emphasis on proof I am not so surprised over the controversy and the different conclusions as to whether or not to lay charges.

The matter of adequate funding for Palm Island and wider issues over the destruction of property and public drunkenness is a sad legacy. I don’t think we will solve the problems of today unless it is acknowledged by governments and the wider community of the need for more imaginative and flexible solutions to break down the current barriers. What seems to work well within Aboriginal communities and gives a glimmer of light, is a system that recognises their traditional justice; intermingled with a local magistrate to oversee execution. I refer to the “Circles of Justice” where prominent aborigines are appointed to form a ‘Circle of justice” in sentencing other aborigines who face their “elders” and answer charges. A sentence is imposed and recognised in law with advice only from a magistrate when it is considered unduly harsh or lenient. Communities have confidence in the administration of justice and repeat offenders are eliminated as the elders keep an eye out for trouble and unruly behaviour within their respective communities.

I wonder if some of the unrest at Palm Island could be better served by local “Circles of Justice “ to bring the community together in a less adversarial manner to embrace the principles of justice. I don’t have first hand experience, but I thought you might be interested in these ideas. You have the possibility of “dry areas” imposed to alienate present publics drunkenness.
The Beattie Govt gives the impression it is championing their cause but I wonder how much funding and infrastructure have been provided to the Island since 1985. It still bears the cars of its horrific colonial past.
Best wishes

Gidday Della,
Thanks for having a peek at my Glenn Ford post. I'm not a great tennis watcher but I happened to be looking at it when that guy seemed to "flash his watch". It sure looked a bit suspicious to me. I seem to leave my blog "catching up" go and then I find I have days, sometimes weeks of looking at others blogs to see what they have been posting. Oh well I guess it takes all types to do their blog viewing in their own way.

Whew, I got to the bottom of the post and thought I must have missed the break between posts!

I loved the photo of the Palm Island children and the happiness just beaming out from their faces. One can only hope that can continue throughout their lives.

Lots of press down here in Melbourne about what's happening with that policeman. I do hope (but why am I not totally confident??) that justice will be done.

I'll be 60, too. Trying to acclimate to the whole idea but afterall, we're only as young as we feel. (Then I'm in BIG trouble!!).
Nice site!

You certainly covered a lot of ground here and ALL very interesting, though I am unfamiliar with most of it....Of course I know who Serena is, but had not heard about this problem...She certainly is a fantastically talented young woman, and as you said, doesn't really need that kind of help, at all! But I had not heard about that Rape Case....in that picrure he is one scary looking man...but I know the newspapers and other media choose pictures to go with their story's that will illustrate the worst, if that is the thrust of the story.....
Thanks so much for your visit and I will be posting the Flowers of The Amaryllis as they decide to share themselves with us! (lol)Beautiful Flowers on a Beautiful Plant.
And, Welcome back to the Blogesphere!
