On Thursday I did a quick run to the garden supply place to get some bark chips and ground cover plants, to go around the sides of the gazebo that don't have grass. This morning (it's 5a.m. Sunday, as I start to write this) I am just waiting for it to be light enough, or late enough, to go out and make a start on the task of planting it all. Still waiting for the rain they have been promising us all week, with my luck that'll happen while I am out there trying to work....
Haven't seen much of the tennis, can't stay awake... but the girl's tournament is shaping up to be quite a competition; I see Amelie is through, and Serena (go Serena!), and the Belgian girl Kym Clijsters, which will please Gattina, who blogs for us from Belgium - our last Aussie, Alicia Molik was eliminated last night, together with our last male Aussie, Lleyton Hewitt. Martina Hingis looks to be back in form - I don't know who to barrack for... Serena, I reckon, who today plays Jelena Jankovic. It'll be a bit of a miracle if it happens, Serena has dropped to 81st in the world rankings, but she's playing well this week - it's always good to see a champion return to form ... we'll see...
Missed a beauty yesterday - two kookaburras landed on the clothesline, which I can see from my bedroom window, they sat there laughing their heads off, and I ran to get the camera, but of course they had stopped by the time I got back, so I didn't get the sound. I'll check the camera later and see what I did get. One of them is still a young bird, we can't be sure if it's the baby from last year, or a new baby from this year
I've had quite a few people send me the "Getting to know your Blog Friends" list of questions to answer. Great idea, thank you, I haven't managed to fill one of these out before, but I do intend to do this one - perhaps later today if it does rain... but for now, it's light outside, so I'm off to play in the yard...
later...
Well, the rain didn't happen, so I got a bit done... now it's too hot, so I am back inside, planning to do some blog-reading till it's time for my nana-nap.

Here's the picture of the kookaburras on the Hills Hoist - what a pity I missed their call.
The young bird is the one in front, looking at it this close, I am sure it must be last year's baby.

I always have to laugh when I read that you worked in the garden and I look out of my window and it's cold, rainy and grey ! I see you wrote at 5 pm and yes I write at 5 am. There must be a difference of 12 h between us. I always get up this early because I wake up and then have my head full of ideas and the itch of writing, so I jump out of my bed, feed the cats, take a cup of coffee and "jump" on my computer. I really love these moments especially in summer when it's light very early and you hear the birds singing. Some Australian Blogger introduced me to the kookaburras which of course I didn't know. Now I felt in love with it, because it must be a very funny bird if he can laugh the whole day. I think we should introduce him into hospitals for depressed people (what do you think ?) Or open an office "Rent a kookaburra, instead of taking pills" Maybe whe could become rich on our old days, lol !
Thank you for your comment on my comment (he,he) I too, read first all people I learned to like and write them, and then only I go to the others, but only if it's interesting. No blogging mums or "nuns", there are some very "holy" blogs here, with cross and Jesus as background (!!)very tasteful, and every § starts "with the help of the Lord" I hate that, religion is something private and not for a Blog, at least in my opinion.
Your gazebo and surrounding areas will look great when completed, Della...don't overdo things in the heat, though...too damn hot for to much exertion during the course of the day.
Mauresmo got knocked out today, unfortunately. I like her. I like that young Jelena Jankovic, too, from watching her play in the preliminary titles leading up to the Open. So many good ones left, still, including Williams. I'm bleary-eyed because I've been watching it through to the wee, small hours. I had to have a nap this afternoon, too as my eyes were closing as I was watching Roddick's match.
I'm seeing yellow balls flash before my eyes! ;)
Hi Gattina, same with me, once I start 'writing' in my head, I have to get up and put it on paper, sometimes in the middle of the night if I am not sleeping.
I will get some sound of the kookaburras, one day, I just need to be in the right place, with the camera. I am hoping once the gazebo is finished and furnished I will be able to just sit in there, watching the birds...
Lee, I've been watching the Williams / Jankovic game, and they suddenly cut it off, gone to another program - I can't believe it, they said 'results will be available in the news later' !!
I'm gonna complain...
Your Gazebo is going to be beautiful by the time you are done! I never mind the initial work to make it.. the upkeep would break my already bad back I'm sure..
How nice that you got that picture of the Kookaburras! I've heard of them but I don't think I've ever seen them before, unless maybe some nature show.
I used to talk with a young man for some time from Queensland. I think you are only the second Australian I've "met"! I hope you get your planting done before it rains (and I do hope it rains so that the new plants set in nicely without you having more work watering them!)
Hi Della ~~ Great photo of the kookaburras, maybe they will return
to visit you. Thank you for your comments and lovely words about my Dad
Glad you enjoy the posts when you visit. Your gazebo will look great wen your flowers bloom. I put in some
portulaccas (Sp?) this year and they have been great. Take care, Della,
Love, Merle.
Wow!!! What a super area you're designing around your gazebo! It's going to be beautiful.
I'd really like to see those birds in person, up close and personal.
Oh, to be sitting in your gazebo right now and enjoying the lovely summer months!
Beautiful work. I'm enjoying your blogging style too!! Hope we can visit with each other often.
For some reason or other kookies like washing lines. There's usually one perched on mine at some stage of the day. It's probably so they get a better view of the grubs on the ground. We have three pairs here, every year they breed and raise their young who then fly off and make their own dynasties.
Your gazebo looks great. You've done a wonderful job and just think of all the pleasure you'll get out of it, especially in the evenings at the moment.
Enjoy your day.
Della, if you go to the Animal Behavior archives and type in kookaburra, the first result (#6582) will give you a fantastic audio of two kookas laughing together, it goes on for more than a minute. Maybe you could link it up to your photo???
I never tire of hearing them laughing in the bush, always makes me smile.
The Gazebo is looking great; soon to be I guess a favourite place to relax.
I saw a Kookaburra in our backyard last night but not as handsome as those who grace your blog. We are hoping for more rain but some Victorian country areas thankfully had good falls.
Best wishes
Val, thanks for the Animal Behaviour link - great site - I am going to look for a scrub turkey audio, good chance they will have one...
hootin' anni, thanks for the visit, great to see you...
Steve, you'd love it here, so much to see, so many different lifestyles..
Deslily, somehow gardening doesn't hurt as much as other things, like, say vacuuming or ironing ::smiles::
Merle, I've been looking at portulaccas too, can't wait till it's time to stop building and start planting..
Robyn, I love the fact that the birds around us seem like family, I never really knew before that birds (some) are territorial..
Lindsay, I'll have to learn to relax, I keep running in and out to get the camera!
Ironing???? what's that??? (heh)
Sounds like you've been very busy but it's all shaping up so nicely!! Soon you'll be able to just relax and enjoy your gazebo:-) Loved the pictures of the birds...I always find it so interesting the varieties of birds you have that we don't!! Hugs xox
Hey! Della...get out of that gazebo!! You are missed! Have a great weekend...lots of snags on the barbie!
Della, loved your post. Is it summer there? We're just now getting winter here in north Florida with tempertures in the low 20s for the next two nights. Many of the azaleas are blooming and they and other plants will get nipped back. The blooms that survive will be even more appreciated.
